Abstract
Elucidates the role of the medical psychotherapist in the adjunctive treatment of essential hypertension. An overview of essential hypertension and its diagnosis, health risks, and incidence are provided. The clinical controlled outcome research on the behavioral treatment of essential hypertension is briefly reviewed with specific implications for the practice of medical psychotherapy. A clinical prescription outlining a step-by-step process of the adjunctive behavioral treatment of essential hypertension by the medical psychotherapist is offered.
