Dr. Gangappa heads the Immunology Laboratory Team of the Influenza Division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA. Shiva received his D.V.M. and M.V.Sc. from India, and a Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA in 1999. Shiva completed postdoctoral research fellowship (1999-2003) at Department of Immunology and Pathology, Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, MO. In 2003, Shiva joined Emory Transplant Center, Department of Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA as an Assistant Professor and later moved to Influenza Divion, CDC, Atlanta, GA in 2007. Shiva’s current research is focused on understanding innate and adaptive immunity to influenza infection and vaccination, mechanisms of immunity in high-risk population, utilizing state-of-the-art tools and multi-omics approaches. As a PI/Co-PI, Shiva received several research grants including American Society of Microbiology Fellowship (2001-2003), American Society for Transplantation Basic Science Faculty development award (2007-2009), biotech industry-sponsored grants, and serves on grant review committees (ad hoc reviewer) of the NIH. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed research papers.
