Hypertension Quality Improvement Retrospective Evaluation
Location
Georgia Campus
Start Date
7-5-2014 1:00 PM
Description
Purpose: The purpose of this evaluation was to determine the percentage of patients with goal blood pressure.
Background: The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure provided the guideline for standard goals of systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Hypertension is a type of cardiovascular disease where the blood pressure, when measured accurately and consistently, is above 140/90 mmHg for patients without diabetes and greater than 130/80 mmHg for patients with diabetes. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes all diseases of the heart and blood vessels, including ischemic heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, is the leading cause of death in Georgia. The latest published data from 2007 indicates that Georgia’s CVD death rate was 9% higher than the national rate.
Methods: The Institutional Review Board of Morehouse School of Medicine granted approval for this retrospective quality improvement evaluation in a retrospective manner. The following non-identifying patient data was collected using the electronic health record: age, sex, and whether the patient has diabetes. Blood pressure goal was categorized based upon the presence of diabetes.
Results: Currently, we are in the collection phase utilizing electronic health record from Morehouse Healthcare Associates.
Conclusions: pending
