Abstract
Anxiety is a disorder characterized by feelings of tension, excessive fear, and physiological changes. Specific classes of anxiety disorders have been recognized, including social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia, panic disorder, and separation anxiety disorder. Cannabis is the most commonly used federal substance in the U.S. In recent years, medical cannabis has been increasingly utilized as a treatment option following approval in many U.S. states. At present, no literature addresses explicitly why individuals with anxiety choose to utilize medical cannabis as a treatment option instead of other longstanding treatment options, including psychotherapy and medication. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to understand what factors motivate individuals to utilize medical cannabis to treat anxiety. A qualitative research design was utilized, and data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis. Six participants were recruited from online platforms, including social media (i.e., Facebook, Reddit) and ResearchMatch to gather a diverse sample. Semistructured interviews were conducted with individuals who were at least 18 years of age and who were referred for and obtained a medical cannabis card for anxiety treatment between 3 and 6 months prior to the interview date. Numerous themes were identified, including comorbid conditions, recommendations from a trusted source, emotional dysregulation, inadequate support, medication, trauma, stigma, and ease of access. Findings from this study should aid in understanding the biopsychosocial factors that can influence the decision to utilize medical cannabis for anxiety. Notably, this knowledge can be useful to healthcare professionals.
