Description
On March, 15 1954, Sherwood R. Mercer, AB, AM dean of Muhlenberg College, became PCO's eighth dean, a position he would hold for the next fifteen years. Mercer, who specialized in educational administration, brought a valuable perspective to the office. At a time when medical technology was accelerating -- and hence, the technical component of medical education -- he recognized the need to maintain a balanced educational experience that included spiritual, social, moral and philosophical components. As the science became more complex and the College grew, Mercer strived to preserve the underlyong basics of the osteopathic concepts, an effort for which he had tremendous faculty support.
