Abstract
According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the percentage of Asian American, Latin American, and African American patients requesting cosmetic procedures has increased by 200%, 323%, and 340%, respectively, from 1999 to 2001. This growth is of particular interest to facial plastic surgeons because some of the most popular procedures being sought by these ethnic groups include rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, and injectable fillers. Specifically, African American and Latin American patients are more likely to request rhinoplasty (80% and 65%, respectively), Asian American patients blepharoplasty (44%) or rhinoplasty (41%), and white patients rhytidectomy (40%). Changes in the demographic composition of patients requesting facial plastic surgery procedures reflect changes in population growth and improvements in economic status among ethnic and racial minority groups.
