Abstract

This chapter on the comorbidity of psychopathology in cognitive and academic specific learning disabilities (SLD) subtypes begins by describing the definition, prevalence, and identification of SLD. It then looks at comorbidity issues in SLD identification and intervention. The next section explores SLD psychosocial subtypes, followed by a section on SLD subtypes across neurocognitive, academic, and psychosocial factors. The subtypes discussed include visual/spatial, fluid reasoning, crystallized/language, processing speed, executive/working memory, and high functioning/inattentive. Next, the chapter considers clinical implications of contrasting neurocognitive, academic and psychosocial characteristics SLD subtypes. The chapter then discusses Cognitive Hypothesis Testing models and Balance Theory. A case study using cognitive behavior therapy is presented
